In this fourth "Penguin Library of American History" series entry, historian Shannon ably tackles the subject of Iroquois diplomacy through the 17th and 18th centuries. Unfortunately, the agile reading and graceful pronunciation of the many polysyllabic American Indian names by actor/narrator George K. Wilson (A Special Mission) are not enough to make this scholarly title, which suffers for its lack of visual aids (e.g., maps), work in audio format. Only those well-grounded in 18th-century European/ Native American relations will be able to listen with pleasure. For regional and specialized collections only.
