This 'Then & Now' volume encompasses contemporary railway maps alongside historical maps from 1923, allowing a fascinating direct comparison and revealing the changing nature of the network
Paul Smith lives in Birmingham. He began his career as a railway
writer with the encouragement, help and input of his wife Shirley.
Shirley suffered from a serious illness and Paul became her
permanent carer in 1999, after which he collaborated on The
Directory of British Tram Depots (2000) with her and Keith Turner,
for Ian Allan Publishing. Paul and Shirley's many happy years
together saw him complete a total of 15 books, including The
Directory of British Engine Sheds and Principal Locomotive
Servicing Points Parts One & Two (1999/2000) with Roger Griffiths,
also for IAP. Shirley Smith sadly died in 2007; her husband Paul's
continuing career as a rail writer - which produced ABC Railway
Depots in 2010, and now Railway Atlas Then & Now - is an abiding
testament to her influence.
Keith Turner is a retired reference librarian who has been a
researcher and writer in the fields of local, social and transport
history for nearly 40 years. His published works include histories
of individual tramways and light- and narrow-gauge railways, a
three-volume directory of all British tramways past and present and
comprehensive studies of pier and cliff railways. His love of
exploring all types of railways and tramways (or their remains)
fits neatly with his passion for discovering interesting old pubs
and traditional pub games.
