Yellin weaves excerpts from diaries and letters with her own intelligent, clear-eyed prose to recover the voices of women too often lost in the histories of "the greatest generation." There are many good works about women in the war years, but I know of none more sweeping in scope or more movingly rendered than Yellin's informative, sensitive volume.
