Jean Michaud is professor of anthropology at Université Laval, Canada. He has published extensively on the societies of the Southeast Asian Massif and taught about them in the United Kingdom, France and Canada. His latest books, Moving Mountains: Highland Livelihoods and Ethnicity in China, Vietnam and Laos (UBC Press, 2010, co-edited with Tim Forsyth) and 'Incidental' Ethnographers. French Catholic Missions on the Frontier of Tonkin and Yunnan, 1880-1930 (Brill, 2007) address the current and past condition of these societies on the margins.

Pacific Affairs, Winter 2006/2007 (vol 79, no 4) Michaud (Centre d'Etudes de l'Asie at U. de Montreal, Canada) presents information on the highland peoples living in the mountainous regions of the present-day states of Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, Burma, and southwest China. Some 200 groups are described in their own individual entries that discuss, at a minimum, their locations, population numbers, languages and occasionally deal with such topics as religious practices, relationships with the state, and legal status, among other related matters. Other entries describe more general issues involved in the study of the highland peoples, for example autonomous regions, languages of trade, and borders.
