Reviews

...a very useful introduction to the history and ethnology of the region. It enables one to see clearly through the cluttered jungle of ethnic names and designations, it provides the latest official statistics concerning the demographic weight of the groups registered according to the countries. Finally, it concludes with a thematic bibliography of 80 pages which, and this is sufficiently rare in English-language works to deserve being stressed, provide a respectable place for studies and other sources in French. L'homme, (Translated From The French) The Historical Dictionary of the Peoples of the Southeast Asian Massif by Jean Michaud is an indispensable source of information about these peoples...a welcome and necessary resource for library collections specializing in Southeast Asian studies. It provides a good starting point for the general reader and the researcher to gain information about the societies that inhabit the Mainland Southeast Asian massif. Reference Reviews, Vol. 21, No. 3 (2007) ...very well researched and organized...an important and useful reference work... Pacific Affairs, Winter 2006/2007 (vol 79, no 4) Michaud (Centre d'Etudes de l'Asie at U. de Montreal, Canada) presents information on the highland peoples living in the mountainous regions of the present-day states of Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, Burma, and southwest China. Some 200 groups are described in their own individual entries that discuss, at a minimum, their locations, population numbers, languages and occasionally deal with such topics as religious practices, relationships with the state, and legal status, among other related matters. Other entries describe more general issues involved in the study of the highland peoples, for example autonomous regions, languages of trade, and borders. Still others treat important historical events or personages. Reference and Research Book News, August 2006
