About the Author

The Editors: Frederick Van Fleteren and Joseph C. Schnaubelt, OSA are internationally recognized scholars in the thought of St. Augustine and its heritage. Frederick Van Fleteren is Professor of Philosophy at LaSalle University and a member of the Augustinian Historical Institute at Villanova University. As editor of and contributor to several volumes on Augustine of Hippo and Anselm of Canterbury, he has lectured extensively and internationally on these subjects. Joseph C. Schnaubelt, OSA is Former Director of the Augustinian Historical Institute and an internationally recognized authority on the Augustinian tradition. Both are general editors of the Collectanea Augustiniana Series.

Contemporary, 'critical' exegesis after Bultmann's 'demythologization' of the Bible seems to be separated by an unbridgeable gulf from the 'pre-scientific' and 'spiritual' approach of the early Christians. This volume, however, makes it unmistakably clear that such an impression in itself is a myth that needs to be superseded, if modern hermeneutics ever wants to regain the original and natural alignment of critical exegetical assessments with their immediate pastoral applications. Toward this goal there can hardly be imagined a better guide than Augustine, who became one of the most prolific and influential theologians of Christianity precisely because he succeeded in integrating highly critical theology based on a discerning spirituality. One can therefore wish that this book will occupy its highly deserved place not only on the shelves of historians, but also find its way into the studies of contemporary critical exegetes.
