Reviews

Prisons and their surrounding communities tend to become close-knit and insular. They are sprinkled all across the landscape and are a little-understood aspect of American society. Ruth Massingill and Ardyth Broadrick Sohn ask, 'What's going on here?' 'Prison City' opens windows of perception and truth with clarity and wit. Well worth reading. (Sheldon Ekland-Olson, Rapoport Centennial Professor of Liberal Arts, University of Texas, Austin; Co-author of 'The Rope, the Chair, and the Needle: Capital Punishment in Texas, 1923-1990') This clinical study of America's number one prison town of Huntsville, Texas, offers the sociological equivalent of X-ray charts of a patient who is very sick but in deep denial. It is our Dachau. (Scott Christianson, Author of 'With Liberty for Some and Notorious Prisons') A wire service reporter, who covered countless executions in the heyday of 'Old Sparky,' swore that the warden's last words to the condemned man were, 'Have a seat, please.' You will not leave the edge of your seat, wherever you are sitting, as you read this remarkable work of scholarship turned drama. The authors of 'Prison City' have artfully combined the stories of a town where life is shaped - and life ends. (Mickey Herskowitz, Co-Author of Dan Rather's Best Seller, 'The Camera Never Blinks')
