HRH The Duke of Edinburgh was first elected president of the International Equestrian Federation in 1964 and was re-elected every four years until he retired in 1986. A number of International four-in-hand driving competitions were taking place on the continent under various national rules, particularly in Germany and Hungary, but there was no common formula. In 1968 he established an international committee under the chairmanship of Sir Michael Ansell to investigate the possibility of drafting some international rules for carriage driving. The committee recommended adapting the FEI rules for three-day-events and within a few years World and European Championships were being organised. The author gave up playing polo in 1971 and decided that he would have a shot at this new sport. He first competed in 1973 and from 1975 till 1986 he was a regular member of the British team at European and World Championships. The cross-country phase was never his strong point, but he showed a particular talent for the dressage and cones competition.
