About the Author

In 1964 HRH The Duke of Edinburgh was elected president of the FEI (International Equestrian Federation) and it was through this connection with the international governing body of the equestrian sports that he initiated the drafting of the first International Rules for Carriage Driving in 1968. In 1971 he gave up playing polo and began looking around for some other outdoor leisure activity. Having been to watch the first European four-in-hand driving championships in Hungary in 1971 and the world championships in Germany in 1972 to see how the new rules were working, he decided to try his hand at the new sport. He began his competitive career in 1973. HRH The Duke of Edinburgh is also the author of Competition Carriage Driving and Driving and Judging Dressage, both published by J.A. Allen.
