Reviews

A distinguished military historian offers a trenchant analysis of a colossal conflict that cost millions of lives and changed the course of 20th century history not just in Europe but also throughout the world. Willmott explains how the war began and then, year by year, illuminates the strategic and tactical factors that determined the results of major battles. Thematic feature boxes fill in the background of key events. However, the strength of this large format volume lies in the poignant personal impressions of the fighting in letters from soldiers on all sides of the war, and above all by the dramatic pictorial account of events given by the 550 photographs and 40 terrain maps that vividly evoke both the spirit and the futility of the slaughter.
