About the Author

Aletta H Jacobs

Reviews

Jacobs (1854-1929) was the first woman to receive a medical degree in Holland. Based on her experiences obtaining that education and treating women patients, she became a national and international leader in the campaigns for birth control, the women's world peace movement, and women's suffrage. Among the women she worked with were Jane Addams and Carrie Chapman Catt. Her autobiography, published in Dutch in 1924, appears here for the first time in English. The editor (English, Univ. of Massachusetts) has extensively footnoted the very readable translation to clarify some of the statements Jacobs makes, identify the people she mentions, and explain organizations or practices that may not be familiar to the modern reader. This is an excellent book for the general reader and a valuable contribution to collections of European feminist history.‘Linda L. McEwan, Elgin Community Coll., Ill.
