Harry Mathews, the author of numerous works of poetry and five novels, including the critically acclaimed Cigarettes, The Conversions and Tlooth, is the winner of the 1982 NEA Grant in fiction writing and the 1991 National Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters Fiction Writing Award. He is the only American member of the French literary group, the OuLiPo, the Workshop for Potential Literature.
