About the Author

John Canarina is professor emeritus of Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, where he was director of orchestral studies from 1973 to 2008. A Juilliard graduate, he has been conductor of the Seventh Army Symphony Orchestra, assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic under Leonard Bernstein's direction, and music director of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. Also active as a writer and critic, he is the author of Uncle Sam's Orchestra: Memories of the Seventh Army Symphony (1998) and Pierre Monteux, Maitre (2003), the latter also published by Amadeus Press. He now lives in Savannah, Georgia, with his wife, Audrey.
