Engaging the best scholarship on Deuteronomy, Vogt presents a fresh view of the countercultural character of the book and rightly sees at its heart a claim for the sovereignty of the Lord of Israel as manifest through covenant and Torah. His analysis of key dimensions of Deuteronomy, especially such major components as centralization, kingship, and the presence of God, will require interpreters to reassess how such matters are to be regarded. Certainly, widespread assumptions about how the book reflects a secularization and demythologization of earlier modes of thinking, acting, and seeing will require reevaluation in the light of Vogt's careful reading of the text of Deuteronomy. -- Patrick D.
