Contributor Biography - German Markus Ritter ist als Kunsthistoriker und Iranist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter und derzeit stellvertretender Direktor am Institut fur Iranistik (IfI) der Osterreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien. Er hat uber Architektur des 17. bis 19. Jahrhunderts in Iran (Monographie kadscharischer Architektur, 2005) und zu fruhislamischer Kunst des 7. bis 9. Jahrhunderts in Arabien (Monographie zu umayyadischer Baudekoration in Vorbereitung) gearbeitet. Gegenwartig forscht er zum Herrscherbild in der Malerei und Austauschprozessen in spatmittelalterlichen Textilien. Er unterrichtet an verschiedenen Universitaten. Ralph Kauz ist als Sinologe und Iranist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter des IfI in Wien. Er hat sich zum Thema der Beziehungen zwischen Ming-China und dem Timuridenreich habilitiert (veroffentlicht 2005 als Monographie) und ist Privatdozent an der Universitat Munchen. Zuvor hat er uber das politische System Irans gearbeitet (Monographie uber politische Parteien, 1995) und forscht derzeit uber den Austausch zwischen China, Zentralasien und Iran in spatmittelalterlicher und fruhmoderner Zeit. Birgitt Hoffmann ist seit 2005 Professorin des Lehrstuhls fur Iranistik an der Universitat Bamberg in Deutschland. Zuvor hat sie als Professorin fur Islamwissenschaften an der Universitat Bonn unterrichtet. Sie hat uber historische Quellen des 17. bis 19. Jahrhunderts in Iran (Edition und Kommentar der Chronik des Rustam al-Hukama, 1986) und uber die Institution religioser Stiftungen (vaqf) im mongolischen Iran des 13. bis 14. Jahrhunderts (Monographie zur Stiftung des ilkhanidischen Wesirs Raschid ad-Din in Tabriz, 2000) gearbeitet. Contributor Biography - English Markus Ritter is a scholar of Islamic Art History and Archaeology and of Iranian Studies. A researcher and the current deputy director of the Institute of Iranian Studies (IfI) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna, he has worked on 17th to 19th-century architecture in Iran (monograph on Qajar architecture, 2005) and on 7th to 9th-century early Islamic art in Arabia (forthcoming monograph on Umayyad architectural decoration). Current research themes include the image of the ruler in painting and interactions in late medieval textiles. He teaches at different universities. Ralph Kauz is a scholar of both Sinology and Iranian Studies. A researcher at the IfI in Vienna, he holds a habilitation based on a thesis on the relations of Ming China and the Timurid empire (published as a monograph, 2005) at the University of Munich, where he also teaches. He has worked earlier on the political system of modern Iran (monograph on political parties, 1995) and is currently pursuing research on interactions between China, Central Asia and Iran in the late medieval and early modern periods. Birgitt Hoffmann holds the chair of Iranian Studies at the University of Bamberg in Germany since 2005. Earlier, she taught as a professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Bonn.
