"Howard Lenhoff, author of Black Jews, Jews and Other Heroes ,
might not consider himself one of his books eponymous heroes. Yet
he played a critical role as president of the American Association
of Ethiopian Jews in negotiating with and, in some cases, applying
pressure to the Israeli government and the Jewish Agency to change
policy on Ethiopian Jews. ... The Israelis ultimately did rescue
tens of thousands of Ehtiopian Jews. Not only that, they provided
them with food, shelter and education at absorption centers
throughout the country. --Robert David Jaffee, Los Angeles Jewish
Journal
Today, the whole struggle to save Ethiopian Jewry from the civil
war that was racking its homeland tends to be remembered in the
warm and comfortable glow of satisfied hindsight. And
understandably so, it was a titanic achievement, a proud milestone
in the history of Israel and, even more so, American Jewry. The
dramatic sagas with Biblical names - Operation Moses, Solomon and
Elijah - were iconic victories of perserverance over apathy, human
rights over oppression, tolerance over racism. --Chris Leppek,
Intermountain Jewish News"
